What Are the Causes of Hair Loss?

One of the most common reasons for hair loss is the lowering of the levels of a certain hormone known as dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. When the follicles miniaturize due to the DHT hormone, this leads to the growth of thin softer hairs, which eventually disappear. This pattern baldness can affect the top part of the scalp and not the back and sides.

Other causes of hair loss include treatments like radiation therapy, medications, stressors, heredity, health conditions, and physical stress on the hairs due to certain hairstyles.

What Is Hair Transplantation?

Hair transplantation is the process of permanently moving a patient’s hair follicles to another part of their scalp. These follicles are usually taken from the back of the head and placed on the thinning or balding areas to address hair loss. The follicles gradually grow new hairs as part of the natural growth cycle.

The procedure can be done in a few different ways, but all of them involve extracting follicles from the back and sides of your scalp, called the donor area. The follicles are then implanted into balding areas on top of your head, called recipient sites. The result is natural-looking hair growth in those balding areas.

Hair transplantation can be performed through several methods, including Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), and Scalp Reduction Surgery (SRS).

What Is Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)?

Follicular Unit Transplantation, or FUT, is a hair transplant procedure that involves removal of a strip of scalp tissue. The donor site—the area from which the donor strip is taken—is typically located behind the hairline and can be covered with your existing hair.

The grafts are carefully dissected from this strip and transplanted into your balding area. The surgeon stitches the incision closed and covers it with a surgical dressing.

What Is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair restoration procedure that involves removing hair follicles individually from the scalp. This is done using a hand-held punch instrument to remove the desired follicular units.

These units are then transplanted to bald or thinning areas on the scalp where they have the best chance of growing normally and producing healthy hair.

What Is a Robotic FUT Hair Transplant?
Robotic FUT hair transplant is a procedure that uses a robotic device to remove donor hair from the back of your head and then transplant it to your scalp. The procedure is more precise than traditional FUT, which means there’s less risk of damage to surrounding areas. It also allows for more hairs to be transplanted at once, making it a faster option for patients who want a fuller head of hair without having to wait as long as they would with traditional methods.

Am I a Candidate for a Hair Restoration Procedure?
You’re a candidate for a hair restoration procedure if you have lost some or all of your hair and want to regain the appearance of fullness and vitality. Patients who have lost hair due to a genetic tendency toward balding or have experienced hair loss due to medical conditions are excellent candidates.

Should I Choose FUE or FUT?

When deciding which method would work best for you, consider your lifestyle, how much time you want to spend with recovery and maintenance after surgery, and what type of results you’re looking for.

Because FUT involves removing a strip of tissue from the donor area, it creates a linear surgical mark on the back of the scalp. Many patients prefer FUE because it avoids this scar.

Does Transplanted Hair Grow Thick?
The growth rate and thickness of the hair transplant depend on the donor area. It can take 3 months to start seeing any growth, and it takes a full year for the hair to mature. Once matured, it will have the same characteristics as the donor-area hair.

Will I Be Sedated During the Hair Transplant Procedure?
During your hair transplant procedure, you have the option to stay awake while watching movies or listening to music. You may also take a nap while they perform the transplantation process. General anesthesia is not typically required, which allows patients to avoid the side effects that sometimes come about due to general anesthesia.

Will There Be Pain During My Hair Transplant Session?
A local anesthetic will be administered at the start of the procedure to numb the areas to any pain. Most patients barely feel anything and are able to go back to work after a very short recovery period of 1 to 2 days.

When you decide to get a hair transplant, you want to trust that the clinic is taking the utmost care of you and your hair. You want your doctor to be skilled and knowledgeable about all aspects of hair restoration, including FUE, FUT, and robotic hair transplants.

It’s also important for your clinic to be equipped with the most cutting-edge equipment available today. That way, they can provide you with the best options for achieving optimal results from your hair transplant procedure.

ARTAS System vs. NeoGraft?
With the ARTAS robotic hair transplant system, the robot removes the follicles directly from your scalp and then injects them into your balding area. The NeoGraft system works differently—it uses an extraction tool to remove follicular units from donor sites on your head while leaving the rest of your hair intact. Then it uses a needle to implant those grafts into the balding area.

How Much Time Does It Take to Complete the Hair Transplant Procedure?
The time it takes to finish the hair transplant procedure varies based on the extent of the area that is affected by hair loss. It will depend on the number of hair follicles being relocated to the target area. Most procedures are done in a single session, but if needed, Dr. Ronan will ask you to come back the next day.

Does a Hair Transplant Last?
A hair transplant offers long-lasting results. Once transplanted, follicles will permanently produce hair on the target area. The transplanted hairs will grow without requiring any special care.
How Long Does It Take to Heal?

The healing process for a hair transplant procedure can vary depending on the type of procedure you undergo, but in general, it takes about three months for a new hairline to be fully healed.

The healing process after a hair transplant is a delicate one. It takes time to allow your scalp to fully recover from the procedure and for the transplanted follicles to grow in. The length of time it takes to heal will depend on a number of factors, including your age and the number of grafts that were placed in your scalp.

What Is the Cost of a Hair Transplant Procedure?
The total cost of hair transplantation in Danville varies from patient to patient depending on the details of their procedure. The type of procedure or treatment chosen affects the overall price. Additionally, cost may be affected by factors such as the number of follicles being transplanted, the number of sessions required, and anesthesia fees.

The duration of your procedure will depend on how much hair is being extracted and transplanted. Most FUE hair transplant procedures take between four to eight hours.

Will I be awake during my procedure?
Yes, patients remain awake during an FUE hair transplant procedure. The area being treated is numbed with local anesthesia to prevent discomfort throughout the procedure. Patients can relax, listen to music, or watch TV as the surgery is performed.
When will I see results from an FUE hair transplant?
You can expect to see new hair growth about four months post-procedure. It may take up to a year to see the final results of your FUE hair transplant procedure.
Will I need more than one FUE hair transplant procedure?

Most patients are satisfied with the results of their first FUE hair transplant procedure. In some cases, patients opt for a second procedure to enhance their initial results.
