What is FUT?

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT), often known as the “strip method,” is a tried-and-true method for permanent hair restoration. During follicular unit transplantation (FUT) in Danville, healthy follicles are harvested from a thin superficial strip of skin excised from the scalp. These follicles are then embedded into the areas of your scalp that are balding.

Why Undergo FUT?

Alopecia and male-pattern baldness cause a receding hairline, and FUT is an excellent way to cover it. FUT has the advantage of having a greater survival percentage for transplanted hairs. Follicles are meticulously extracted with FUT, leaving the protective tissue intact, resulting in stronger and higher-quality grafts than various other techniques.

Who Are the Best Candidates for FUT?

Patients with enough hair on their heads to serve as grafts are the best candidates for FUT. Ideal candidates for FUT are men with androgenic alopecia (also known as male-pattern baldness). FUT hair-transplant surgery is best for patients who have reasonable expectations and a history of adhering to hair-loss drugs and therapies.

FUT candidates should be in their late twenties or older, since this is the age at which hair loss typically begins to become noticeable. If follicular unit strip surgery is performed too soon, the results will deteriorate as hair loss develops.

The FUT Consultation

During your initial visit, Dr. Ronan will go through the details of the follicular unit transplantation (FUT) procedure with you. You will be given pre-operative instructions to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the process. Additionally, Dr. Ronan will go over your complete medical history to ensure that the procedure is right for you.

The FUT Procedure

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is done with local anesthetic. The hair in the donor area is trimmed short during the FUT procedure to make it easier to deal with. The donor area is usually found on the rear or side of the head, where baldness is less common.

Dr. Ronan removes a strip of skin from the donor location. Thousands of viable hair follicles can be found on one strip. He preserves the follicles by immersing the strip of skin in a specific solution while he continues the treatment. He meticulously closes the donor region with stitches. Because the hair outside the donor site is unaffected, it can be used to conceal the incision as it heals.

follicular units are harvested from the donor strip by Dr. Ronan. These follicles are then inserted one by one in the balding areas, with great care taken to ensure that the donor hairs blend in perfectly with the natural hair in the area.

Recovery

Dr. Ronan uses a sterile bandage to protect the donor region as it recovers. Oral pain medication will be prescribed. To prevent significant edema, Dr. Ronan may advise patients to keep their heads elevated at all times, including overnight, for at least three nights.

To allow the transplanted hairs to settle completely, Dr. Ronan provides patients specific shampooing and grooming instructions. It could take up to 5 weeks for patients to fully recover. In all cases, patients will be able to return to work a few days after the FUT procedure.

When Will I See Results?

In 10 days after receiving a hair transplant using the FUT procedure, your head should be healed and clear of scabs. After 4 months, new hair will begin to grow in the treated regions. During the first 10 to 15 months, your scalp will experience improved hair density.

How Much Does FUT Cost?

The cost of FUT is not covered by health insurance, because it is a cosmetic operation. The price of FUT is determined by the extent of the areas to be treated. FUT costs are usually calculated on a cost-per-graft basis.
